The downtown Edmonton condo market has went through a resurgence in recent years.  Many businesses left the downtown core in previous decades, and now the population is moving back into the area.  An interesting article was written by the CBC about how some of the "seedier" areas of downtown have been transformed into one of the most popular areas, and possibly the heart of downtown.  Click here for the downtown Edmonton article.

Several high rises have been built in the last few years, and businesses are starting to move back to the area. The final approval of the Downtown Hockey arena has helped solidify the area as a place to live again.  The area is predominantly multi family and commercial.   Many of the older warehouses that border 104 avenue have been converted to loft condos.   The Light Rail Transit (LRT) runs through the area and provides easy access to the northeast and south side of Edmonton.  Grant MacEwan college borders the north side of downtown and the University of Alberta is an easy commute on the LRT therefore making the area popular with post secondary students. The downtown Farmer's Market on 104 street has become a popular summer attraction and a part of downtown that has went through the biggest transition.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about downtown is how the price per square foot for downtown Edmonton condos have moved up to be competitive with Oliver condo prices.  Some of this jump in prices have to do with the addition of new buildings in the downtown core, but it is fascinating what a few years have done to prices in the downtown core of Edmonton.
